Frequently Asked Questions — Outdoor Kitchens Sydney
How much does a custom outdoor kitchen cost in Sydney?
A custom outdoor kitchen in Sydney typically costs between $15,000 and $80,000 depending on size, materials, and appliances. A basic built-in bench with sink and cabinetry starts around $15,000–$25,000. A full entertainer's kitchen with pizza oven, bar fridge, rangehood, and Smartstone benchtop ranges from $40,000–$80,000+. Always include a 10–15% contingency budget.
How long does it take to build an outdoor kitchen?
A standard custom outdoor kitchen from MJ Leckie Carpentry typically takes 6–8 weeks from quote approval to completion. This includes cabinet manufacture (4–6 weeks), installation (1–2 days), benchtop measure-up and fabrication (2–4 weeks). The planning and quoting phase adds 2–4 weeks before work begins.
Do I need council approval for an outdoor kitchen in NSW?
Most outdoor kitchens in NSW don't require a Development Application (DA). Under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008, outdoor kitchens meeting specific height and setback criteria are generally approved as exempt development. However, if your outdoor kitchen includes a new roof structure attached to the house, a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) may be required. Always confirm with your local council or builder.
What materials are best for an outdoor kitchen in coastal Sydney?
In coastal environments like Manly, Dee Why, and Palm Beach, you need materials that resist salt air, UV, and humidity. MJ Leckie Carpentry uses polytec Alfresco aluminium-framed cabinetry (7-year warranty, Australian Made) and Smartstone Sintered Collection benchtops (100% UV stable, 15-year warranty). For hardware, specify 316 marine-grade stainless steel throughout.
Are polytec Alfresco doors suitable for outdoor kitchens?
Yes — polytec Alfresco doors are specifically designed for covered alfresco outdoor kitchen cabinetry. They feature 5mm compact laminate inserts in aluminium frames — impervious to water, high impact, and stain resistant. They must be installed in a covered (undercover) area and are not suitable for direct rain exposure or intense UV.
Can I use Smartstone for my outdoor kitchen benchtop?
Yes — Smartstone's Sintered Collection (launched March 2024) is 100% UV stable and fully weatherproof, making it ideal for outdoor kitchens. It's non-combustible (safe next to a BBQ), resistant to thermal shock, and requires no sealing. It carries a 15-year warranty. Note: the old Smartstone engineered stone (quartz) has been discontinued and was not recommended for outdoor use.
