Outdoor Kitchen Maintenance —
Keeping Your Kitchen in Top Condition

A practical maintenance schedule for outdoor kitchens in Sydney's coastal climate — from weekly care to annual professional checks.

A well-maintained outdoor kitchen on Sydney's Northern Beaches should last 15–20+ years. The main enemies are salt air (for hardware and appliances), UV (for materials specified incorrectly — another reason to use the right products from the start), and grease buildup (for the BBQ).

The maintenance schedule below is based on what we recommend to all clients on handover.

After Each Use

Clean BBQ grates while still warm

A wire brush removes residue most effectively while the grates are hot. Wipe down with a damp cloth after.

Wipe benchtop with damp cloth

Smartstone Sintered is non-porous — a damp cloth removes food and cooking residue effectively.

Empty and clean the pull-out bin

Prevent odours and pest attraction by keeping the bin emptied.

Monthly

Rinse cabinetry with fresh water

Critical for coastal properties within 2–3km of the ocean. Salt deposits accumulate on surfaces even in covered areas and will accelerate corrosion of hardware if not removed.

Wipe down tapware and sink

Remove water spots and any mineral deposits. In hard-water areas, a mild descaler will keep chrome finishes clear.

Check drawer runners and hinges for smooth operation

Early detection of any stiffness allows lubrication before wear occurs.

Every 6 Months

Lubricate hinges and drawer runners

Use a dry PTFE (Teflon) spray lubricant — not oil, which attracts dust and grime. Apply to hinge pivot points and drawer runner tracks.

Deep-clean BBQ burners and drip tray

Remove burners and clean with a wire brush. Clear any spider webs or wasp nests from burner ports — a common cause of uneven flames.

Check all sealant and caulking joints

Inspect where benchtop meets splashback or wall, and around sink edges. Re-seal with a suitable outdoor-rated silicone if any cracks or gaps appear.

Flush outdoor fridge coils

Check manufacturer guidelines — most outdoor fridges benefit from a coil clean every 6 months to maintain efficiency.

Annually

Full BBQ service

Annual service by a licensed gas fitter is recommended for all gas appliances. This includes checking connections, cleaning burners, checking igniters, and testing for leaks.

Gas connection leak test

A soapy water test on all gas connections and fittings. If you see bubbles, call a licensed gas fitter immediately.

Check all electrical fittings

Inspect weatherproof covers on all outdoor power points. Replace any that show cracking or UV damage. Have an electrician check RCD operation.

Inspect benchtop edges and joints

Check for any chips on the benchtop edge, and that the benchtop is still firmly supported. Sintered stone is very durable but edge chips can occur from heavy impacts.

Gas Safety — What to Do If You Smell Gas

⚠️ If you smell gas near your outdoor kitchen:

  1. 1.Do not use any appliances, light switches, or electrical equipment in the area
  2. 2.Turn off the gas supply at the bottle or meter
  3. 3.Leave the area and ventilate (open any doors or windows near the kitchen)
  4. 4.Call a licensed gas fitter before re-using any gas appliances
  5. 5.If you cannot isolate the gas, call 000 or the NSW Gas Emergency line: 131 909 (Jemena) or your gas network operator
